Taking a taxi from Sharjah Airport

There is a metered rank outside arrivals, it runs around the clock, and it is the option that requires nothing from you in advance. What it does not do is tell you the price before you set off: there is no fixed fare by destination here, and a surcharge is added to every journey that begins at the airport. That is worth knowing before you compare it with anything.

Where the rank is, and what to walk past

The rank is outside the arrivals hall, not inside it. Follow the signs out of the building rather than accepting an offer in the hall: anyone approaching you with a car inside the terminal is selling something other than the metered fare.

The emirate’s taxi company also runs a limousine service from outside arrivals. It is a legitimate product — a better car, a fixed arrangement — and it is not the metered taxi. If the price matters to you, the distinction between the two is the single most useful thing to carry out of that door.

How the fare works

The meter runs, and a fixed surcharge is added because the journey started at the airport. That surcharge applies to every airport departure, whatever the distance, which means it weighs heavily on a short hop and barely at all on a long one.

There is no published fare by destination. Nobody at the rank is quoting you a price, and nobody should be: the amount is whatever the meter says at the end, plus the surcharge.

Ask for the meter if it is not running. It should be, from the start. This is a normal request and not an accusation.

Have small notes, and expect to be asked about cards. Payment methods vary by vehicle rather than by company.

Family and ladies’ taxis

The operator runs family vehicles, which are larger and take more luggage, and a ladies’ taxi driven by women. Both come from the same rank rather than from a separate queue, so ask the marshal rather than looking for a different sign.

If you are travelling with small children, be aware that a child seat is not something a rank can produce on request. That is the one thing an ordinary taxi cannot solve at the moment you need it.

When a taxi is the right answer, and when it is not

Take the taxi when you have landed outside coach hours, when you are going somewhere the coach does not serve, or when you simply want to be moving in the next few minutes without having arranged anything.

Take the coach if it is running and going your way — it leaves from the terminal on a published timetable, and buses and coaches has the destinations and the operating windows.

Arrange a car in advance if the price needs to be known before you travel, if you are landing at an hour when you would rather not be negotiating anything, or if you need a child seat. Going the other way: a taxi to the airport

The journey out is not the mirror image of the journey in, and two differences matter.

The airport surcharge is a charge on journeys that start at the airport. Travelling towards it is a straightforward metered fare from wherever you are.

You can order one instead of queueing. The emirate’s taxi company takes bookings by phone, and hotels will call one for you. For a flight at an awkward hour that is worth doing the night before rather than standing at a kerb hoping.

The harder variable is not the taxi at all: it is the traffic between the emirates. The roads through this conurbation are busiest at the ends of the working day, and a journey that is quick at midday is a different proposition at the end of the working afternoon. Work backwards from the check-in time your airline asks for, add the journey, and then add a margin that has nothing to do with the distance.

What to watch out for

“Taxi” is not always the metered taxi. The word is used by more than one product at this airport, and the difference is the whole fare.

Ride-hailing is not in the airport’s own list of ground transport. That does not prove no car will come, but it means no pick-up point has been confirmed. Do not build a late arrival around an app.

There is no railway. No metro, no airport rail link, nothing — the metro network of the neighbouring emirate does not reach this airport, and people who researched the wrong airport in the same conurbation arrive expecting one.

Agree nothing before you are in a metered car. A fare discussed in the hall is by definition not the metered fare.
