Getting your family and friends into the Emirates

Most people flying out of this airport live here. If that is you, the visa question is not about your own passport — you have a residence permit and it does the work. It is about your mother, your brother, your friend from home, and whether they can come and see you.

If you are the one visiting instead, the answer depends entirely on which passport you hold — and that is a different set of rules.

Sponsoring someone to visit you

If you are a resident here, you can bring a guest in on your own sponsorship. The mechanism matters more than the paperwork, because it explains everything that follows.

The permission rests on you, not on them. You are vouching for a named person, for a defined period, and you are the party the state is dealing with. That is why it works for guests whose own passport would otherwise face a consulate queue at home — and why it is usually the faster route for exactly those guests.

It is arranged here, not there. Your guest does not queue at an embassy in their own country. You arrange it from this side; the airport operator runs its own travel agency that handles this among other things, and it is not the only place that does.

There is a refundable security deposit. This is the part people are not expecting, and it is not a fee: it is money held as a guarantee that your guest leaves before the visa expires, and it comes back when they do. Ask what it is and how long it is held for before you commit to a date, because it is held for the visit rather than for the paperwork.

Your guest’s passport has to have real time left on it. Not “valid on the day of travel” — a margin is required, set by the authority, and a passport that expires soon after the trip will fail at the application rather than at the airport.

You will need a recent photograph of the right kind, and the specification is exact rather than approximate — a colour photograph against a plain white background. A phone snapshot cropped square is the single most common thing sent back.

What the sponsor is actually signing up for

Worth reading before you offer, rather than after.

You are responsible for the visit, not just for the application. The deposit exists because the state is holding somebody accountable for the guest leaving on time, and that somebody is you.

Overstaying costs money, and it is the guest who is liable for it. It is the sort of problem that grows quietly while everyone assumes the date was later than it was. Establish the exact expiry the day the visa is issued and count backwards from it when booking the return flight.

Send them with your address, your contact number and their return booking. These are asked for at the border, and a guest who has them to hand has a shorter conversation than one who does not.

Plan the flight around the visa, not the visa around the flight. Processing takes as long as it takes, and a non-refundable ticket bought first is how a family visit turns into an argument.

If you are the one visiting

Three situations, and which one you are in is decided by the passport you hold rather than by where you live or where you are flying from.

You need nothing arranged in advance. Some nationalities are admitted for a visit on arrival with no prior application at all. If this is you, the airport is a formality and the only real question is how long you may stay.

A visa is issued to you on arrival. A step up in paperwork rather than in difficulty: it is granted at the airport, on conditions, without an application before you travel. Where those conditions include holding a residence permit or a visa from another country, they are checked at check-in as well as on arrival — an airline that is not satisfied will not board you, and that is where this goes wrong most often.

You must have it before you fly. For some passports the visit has to be arranged in advance, through a consulate, through an airline, through a hotel booking, or through a resident who sponsors you. The route differs and the requirement does not: arrive without it and the journey ends at check-in.

Which of the three applies to your passport is a legal fact with a source and a date behind it rather than a matter of opinion, and it is exactly the kind of rule that changes by decree rather than by season. Where a passport has not been confirmed against a primary source, nothing is stated rather than guessed — and that means “we have not confirmed this”, not “nothing is required”.

There is no transit visa

This one deserves its own heading because it quietly decides whether a cheap connection is a good idea.

There is no transit visa at this airport. Either you can enter the country in your own right — visa-free, on arrival, or with something arranged in advance — or you stay inside the terminal until your next flight.

For a connection at a low-cost base that can mean a long wait on the wrong side of a door you cannot open. Before you book an itinerary with a long gap in the middle, work out which of the two you are, and if the answer is “inside the terminal”, read what there is to do in the building and price the wait honestly. There is no luggage storage in the airport’s own list of services either, so the bags stay with you as well.

What to have ready

For a sponsored guest: their passport with a real margin of validity, a photograph to the stated specification, your own residency details, the money for the fee and the refundable deposit, and dates that are not yet booked.

For a visitor arranging their own: the passport, whatever your own case requires as proof, a return or onward booking, and the address you will be staying at — the last one is asked for at passport control and is easier to have written down than to remember.

For everyone: the expiry date, in writing, on the day it is issued.
